IAL students take part in an intensive one-year experience that blends in-person and distance learning with hands-on internships and professional development. Our unique structure allows for ultimate flexibility for those looking to get a foot in the door, or professionals who have an existing position within athletics and education. Learn more about how the year is structured below.
IAL Program Structure
SUMMER
JUNE – AUGUST
The IAL program begins with a 6-week intensive summer session on the University of Washington campus. Students take one course per week and can expect to be in class most of the day, Monday through Friday.
FALL
SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER
Students will enroll in two courses while working in their internship. Each class will be completed in an online asynchronous format that allows students to complete coursework around their work schedules. Students will return to the Seattle campus for a 3-day executive session in October to connect with classmates and engage in classroom work with their instructors.
WINTER
JANUARY – MARCH
The winter quarter has the same course load and structure as the fall, with an early February 3-day executive session back in Seattle. Students will also attend the NCAA Convention in late January, an experience that is funded by the IAL program. During this time, internships will also continue.
SPRING
APRIL – JUNE
Students will complete program requirements by taking three final courses during the spring quarter, and returning to campus in early June for a final, multiple-day executive session, and wrapping up their internship experience.
