On Tuesday, November 14, the Center for Leadership in Athletics co-hosted the pre-conference forum on college sports at the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Conference with the Knight Commission.
The session, "NCAA Division I College Sports Finances: Where the Money Comes From and Where the Money Goes," offered attendees an introduction and a hands-on learning opportunity to better understand issues related to financing intercollegiate athletics. These issues include student costs, educational access, equity in opportunity, and educational quality.
The pre-conference forum kicked off with a panel discussion between John Cheslock, Associate Professor of Education, Pennsylvania State University; Valerie Cleary, Athletic Director, Portland State University; and Lynn Hickey, Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics, Eastern Washington University, and was moderated by Willis Jones, Associate Professor from the University of Kentucky.
The session's keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Hirko, an Associate for Communications and Research at the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics and an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at Defiance College, lead an interactive discussion showing attendees how to use the Knight Commission’s NCAA Division I College Athletics Financial Information (CAFI) Database so that they can make enlightened decisions in their respective institutions.
We'd like to thank the ASHE Office, the Knight Commission, Dr. Scott Hirko, Willis Jones, John Cheslock, Valerie Cleary, and Lynn Hickey.
